The Pura Ulun Danu Bratan temple is a famous old Hindu lake temple that sits on the waters of scenic Lake Beratan in Bedugul, north Bali.
This 12-story pagoda was built by the Balinese king of Mengwi in 1633, and the lake it sits on is actually a crater lake (from an old volcano). Lake Bratan is also the second biggest lake in Bali, after Lake Batur in Kintamani.
This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!Where To Stay
Ulun Danu Lake Bratan Temple
The Pura Ulun Danu Bratan temple is one of the most iconic views in Bali, and it shows up on everything from airline brochures to travel magazines.
This templeโs unusual pagoda has even been featured on the 50,000 Rupiah cash note in Indonesia.
It sits in the mountains at an unusually high elevation compared to the rest of Bali, so the temps are pretty cool (about 5 ยฐC lower than at sea level).
Sadly itโs also another spot that has been affected by overtourism and overdevelopment, so it can be a bit crowded at times.
With that said, itโs still a really nice spot that I think is worth a visit if you have time!
If youโre looking for something less touristy, consider checking out the Pura Segara temple on Lake Batur instead. It has similar views but way less visitors.
Photo Tips
If you plan to take photos, Iโd recommend getting here no later than 9 AM because the mountains at Lake Bratan Bali are normally clouded up after that.
As you can see in the pictures below, the water temple looks way more impressive when the mountains are visible in the background, although the fog effect can look nice too!
Side note: drones are not allowed anywhere at Danu Beratan since itโs a Hindu temple.
Hours & Entrance Fee
- Hours: 7 AM โ 7 PM
- Entrance Fee (Adults): 75k IDR (~$5)
- Entrance Fee (Kids 5-11): 50k IDR
This is the current entrance fee and opening hours for Ulun Danu Bratan as of 2024, but itโs a very popular temple so they seem to raise the ticket price every year or two. Itโs getting a little pricey now, but I still think itโs worth visiting at least once.
You can pay the entrance fee with cash or credit card now, which is a nice improvement.
Even though the official hours are 7 AM to 7 PM, people often come here earlier for sunrise photos and theyโre allowed to enter.
How To Get To Ulun Danu Bratan
The Pura Ulun Danu Bratan temple is located in Bedugul, which is in the north part of Bali, Indonesia.
The best way to get there is to rent a scooter or hire a private car and driver (both of these can be booked online).
