The Lae Mbilulu Waterfall is a big twin waterfall in North Sumatra, Indonesia, not too far from the main road that winds around west Lake Toba.
Itโs an easy waterfall to visit if youโre already traveling through the Lake Toba area, especially if you happen to be driving from Medan to Singkil to visit the Banyak Islands.
This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!Lae Mbilulu Waterfall โ What To Expect
The hike to the waterfall is all downhill and only takes about 10 minutes. If you somehow get lost, the local Indonesian name for the waterfall is Air Terjun Lae Mbilulu.
Thereโs a bridge across the stream with several viewpoints for taking pictures, but be careful if you go in the rainy season because the rocks can be slippery and thereโs a crazy amount of spray and moisture from the falls.
Lae Mbilulu is a nice twin waterfall, and during the dry season you could probably swim here. Enjoy!
Entrance Fee
FREE as of 2021.
There was no entrance fee here when we visited. That may change over time if it gets more popular.
How To Get There
The Lae Mbilulu Waterfall is located in North Sumatra, about 30-40 minutes from the town of Sidikalang.
The best way to visit this waterfall is with a private driver in transit from Medan to Singkil or vice versa (for example when visiting the Banyak Islands). See below for our Singkil driver recommendation.
When you arrive at the parking area, itโs just a 10 minute walk down to the waterfall.
Our Singkil Driver
Adi Chaniago is a private driver based in Singkil (the gateway port to the Banyak Islands) and he did most of the driving for our epic Sumatra road trip.
His daily rates are fair and he has a lot of experience driving to tourist sites all over North Sumatra and Aceh Province. Send him the itinerary you have in mind for Sumatra, and he will get back to you with a price quote.
Heโs friendly but doesnโt speak the greatest English, so if you happen to stay at MB Camp Singkil or Palambak Island Resort in the Banyak Islands (which you should!) then Claudine the owner may be able to help with translating and explaining your itinerary to him.
You can contact Adi via WhatsApp at โ +62 812-6247-0584. Happy travels!

Thank you for visiting this place. Mbilulu waterfall also well known as rainbow waterfall. At certain time, you can see the beatiful rainbow over the waterfall. There is also another waterfall: Lae Une. It is about half our from Mbilulu waterfall, near to Salak city.
Thanks Sahat! Maybe we can see the Lae Une waterfall next time we’re in Sumatra.
Wow, I The twin waterfall is a must-visit place in Indonesia. Been to Indonesia once but I didn’t have a chance to visit these waterfalls maybe when I get back I would. It excites me more because the entrance fee is for free and the locals are very nice and accommodating. Thanks for this one. Take care with your trips
