Bali Botanical Garden In Bedugul, North Bali

by David & Intan

The Bali Botanical Garden in Bedugul has 160 hectares (400 acres) of jungle and forest, with thousands of different species of tropical plants and huge trees.

Itโ€™s the biggest botanic garden in Indonesia, and definitely deserves a stop next time youโ€™re exploring north Bali, even if itโ€™s just to see the huge banyan tree at the back of the park!

This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!

Where To Stay

Bedugul Botanic Garden

The Bedugul Botanical Garden (also known as Kebun Raya Bali) sits on a hillside of the Bedugul caldera basin.

Everything in the park is pretty well laid out and reasonably maintained, with water fountains, walking paths, and a loop road so you can explore the forest by car.

The highlight for us was easily the massive banyan (ficus?) tree at the back of the park, which has half a dozen huge stumps and may be hundreds of years old. It looks like one of the walking tree ents from Lord of the Rings!

Other plants on display include big tree ferns that look straight out of Jurassic Park, a bamboo forest, and an entire section dedicated to cactuses. Sometimes they even have Rafflesia (giant corpse flowers) here!

Lots of Bali locals come to the botanical garden for prewedding photos, picnics, walks, and fresh air. Since itโ€™s about 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) above sea level, the temperatures here are significantly cooler than other parts of Bali.

On a clear day, you can see Lake Beratan from the park. Thereโ€™s even a treetop experience with zip lines and tree houses, but we didnโ€™t try this.

All in all, you can expect to see most of the highlights of the park in under an hour.

Hours & Fees

  • Hours: 8 AM โ€“ 6 PM
  • Entrance Fee: 30k IDR (~$2)
  • Car Entry:* 15k IDR (20k on weekends/holidays)

*Cars can enter and drive a loop through the park if you pay a little extra entrance fee. This is a good idea because everything is spread out.

How To Get There

The Bali Botanical Garden is located in Bedugul, Bali.

Itโ€™s a 1 hour drive from Ubud, or a bit less from the Singaraja (north Bali) area.

The best way to get there is to rent a scooter or hire a private car and driver (both of these can be booked online).

The entrance to the botanic garden is close to the famous Ulun Danu Beratan lake temple, so itโ€™s easy to visit both places in the same day trip!

Bali Private Driver & Motorbike Rental

If you want to explore Bali in the comfort and safety of a private car with an English speaking driver, my top recommendation would be GetYourGuide.

Their price is 650k Rupiah ($45 USD) for a full day of driving and sightseeing in Bali (up to 10 hours) for 1-5 passengers. That's the total price for the whole car + driver + petrol! It's a great deal. They also offer affordable hotel transfers from the airport.

If you'd rather travel by motorbike, they have that too. Their scooter rentals start at 140k Rupiah (~$9) and include a helmet, rain coat, and free delivery in the south Bali area.

We've used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they're great! Highly recommended.
